Lily is a white young girl who is motherless and only has her father. She calls her father 'T.Ray' because he's not really like a dad to her. Rosaleen, the housekeeper, is her 'step-in-mom' and cares for Lily despite her hard exterior. Unfortunately Rosaleen cannot adopt Lily because she's black. One day Lily decides that she wants to leave her father but she can't. So she lies and goes along with Rosaleen to Sylvan on her Birthday. Rosaleen wanted to register for voting. On the trip to Town they rest in the church. When they're walking in the streets, they meet a rude white man who demands Rosaleen defer to him. When Rosaleen spills snuff juice on him, he immediately contacts the police and Rosaleen along with Lily is arrested. T.Ray bails Lily out and rushes her home. Apparently the man who accosted Rosaleen was Franklin Posey who hated blacks. And T.Ray in his anger tells Lily that her mother, Deborah had simply come back to get her stuff and would've left Lily with him. Lily runs from him to her room crying. She had really loved her mother. So when she stopped crying, she realizes that T.Ray must've lied to her. But this time T.Ray had gone to far so Lily runs away and manages to bust Rosaleen out. Lily had a picture of a black Mother Mary. The picture was her mother's before Deborah had died. On the back of the picture, there was an address 'Tiburon S.C'. So Lily decided to go to Tiburon, South Carolina. In Tiburon, South Carolina Lily found Augusta Boatwright. Augusta Boatwright was a unique woman with two sisters (May and June) and the picture of the black Mary was used by her to label the jars of honey, she had made. Anyway Augusta Boatwright takes Lily in. Lily had lied to Augusta. She had said that her name was 'Lily Williams' and Rosaleen's name was 'Rosaleen Smith'. They had run away because Lily's parents were dead and she had a relative in Richmond so they need to stay for a while. Soon, both Lily and Rosaleen adjust to a new life. Lily rather likes this new life and wants to forget about her past. But she is reminded of that when she overhears that June doesn't want her there. Lily ignores June and a little while later she meets Zachary 'Zach' Lincoln Taylor. They were often partnered in many of the jobs they do for Augusta. One day, Zach gets arrested for being rude to a white man. When May finds out that Zach was in jail, she kills herself. Apparently May had an illness. May could feel the sadness or negative emotions in any bad situation. She used to have a twin sister, April and May used to feel April the same way. What happened to one, happened to the other. It was as if the world itself became May's twin. Augusta mourns May for a long time. June agrees to marry her boyfriend, Neil. And finally Lily has a talk about her mother with Augusta. At last Lily mourns her mother for sometime. And when she starts to heal, her father T.Ray finds her and instead of seeing her, he sees her mother who had left him. And when he sees Lily for Lily, he leaves her there. Lily thinks that he was telling her 'Lily, you're better off here without me.'.
